About Sunshine Mahowald

Sunshine was born October 20, 2001 and came into my life shortly after in December of 2001 when I adopted her from the Golden Valley Humane Society. I was only 6 years old at the time. I was instantly drawn to her from the large litter of kittens and as I held her on my lap for the first time, I knew right away that her name would be Sunshine. Sunshine was by my side from kindergarten through college, moving between at least a dozen different homes. She was absolutely devoted to me, and I to her. When we had to spend long weekends apart due to my parents’ divorce, she would wait patiently for my return and then cry out with joy the second she heard me come through the front door on Sunday night. She taught me love, loyalty, and compassion in a way no creature has before or since. Just before her 19th birthday, she was diagnosed with kidney disease that progressed quicker than we expected, but in a way this was a blessing because she did not suffer. She was so peaceful in her final weeks and gave me the privilege of caring for her up until her final breath on March 15, 2021. I have never seen an animal pass so gracefully and with so much serenity; she truly was ready to go after a very long and fulfilling life. The bond I share with Sunshine could never die and will remain irreplaceable. I got nearly two decades of life with my best friend, and while that will never feel like enough, I am forever grateful. I love you, Sunshine.
