About Dakota Pecore

With hearts full of love and deep sorrow, we say goodbye to our beloved Dakota, a spunky and spirited Tortoiseshell kitty who blessed our lives from 2008 until her peaceful passing of old age. Dakota was adopted as a young kitten from Dakota County Animal Shelter alongside her sister, Jasmine, and from the very beginning, she was unforgettable. Her striking half-black, half-beige face, her part-Rex curls, and her unmistakably bold personality made her stand out as something truly special. It took weeks to find a name fitting enough for her, but like the Native American Dakota tribe of Minnesota, her name came to represent strength, presence, loyalty, and spirit—a spirit that will live on forever in our hearts.
Dakota was the epitome of a true Tortie: full of attitude, endlessly talkative, and deeply social. As a kitten, she was a dedicated mouser and a fearless little athlete, flinging toy mice into the air and even playing fetch until she was about two years old. She never met a stranger—every visitor instantly became her friend, every lap her throne. Dakota sought connection and affection like no other, choosing companionship and closeness above all else. In her later years, she made sure she was never forgotten—demanding attention at any hour and waking her family with gentle persistence to remind them just how much she loved and needed them.
Dakota remained steadfast through every chapter of life: building a first career, meeting her future dad, welcoming children, creating a forever home, grieving the loss of loved ones, and saying goodbye to her sister Jasmine. She celebrated the world with us, enjoying fresh air from hand-built outdoor cat enclosures, hunting and proudly presenting mice (and even the occasional bat), and filling our home with joy, laughter, companionship, and warmth.
She was family. She was comfort. She was love.
Though our hearts are broken, they are also full—because Dakota lived a long, rich, beautiful life surrounded by those who adored her. We will forever miss the sound of her voice, the weight of her cuddles, the warmth of her presence, and the way she insisted on being close, always. We are grateful beyond words for every moment she gave us and every lesson of loyalty, resilience, and unconditional love she shared.
Run free, sweet Dakota. May you rest peacefully, reunited with Jasmine, chasing toy mice in endless sunshine. You will always be cherished, always remembered, and forever loved.
Until we meet again. 🐾💛
