About Lucky Kingston

Passed on May 29, 2012

I had graduated from college in May 1994 and moved in with a roommate
in Minneapolis near the U of M. One day my roommate asked if I was
interested in adopting a cat. She and I had known each other for
years and we both loved cats. I immediate said yes and in late August
or early September we went to the Animal Humane Society to adopt a
kitten. Tiffany spotted her first and brought her to me. She was
tiny, only 8 weeks old (born July 1, 1994), with brilliant light blue
eyes and a pink nose. She had been wrestling with the other kittens
when we picked her up to take home with us. She was scared that
first day but boy did she adapt to being with us and quickly became
our little “diva” girl. When my roommate and I parted ways that
following spring I was determined to keep Lucky, whom my roommate
named, as I knew then we were meant to spend a lifetime together.

During her second year in life I taught her to walk around the pond on
a leash out back at my mom’s place with another family cat and dog.
She was great and loved the scenery. She didn’t venture out much for
a few years but when I bought my house she knew she had become queen
of the castle and the outside world in our neighborhood had become her
kingdom. She spent many nights exploring the neighborhood and
bringing her mom presents. Needless to say I tried very hard to
rescue the mice, chipmunks and birds she would catch and bring home.
When she tried to go after a clan of geese I knew her ego had grown
too much and she needed to relax when it came to hunting, which
finally happened.

When Lucky was 8, Jake joined our family. She showed him in her own
way that he was welcome but that she was head of the household. Lucky
also taught him how to be happy when I returned home from travels, how
to love life and enjoy your surroundings. They were friends for many
years and Jake stayed by her side for the past few months, during her
final days and her passing at home on May 29, 2012.

Lucky loved to have her belly rubbed, took advantage of dogs who were
scared of cats (she would sit on the stairs daring them to go past
knowing full well they didn’t want to pass her) and would curl up next
to you when you were sick to make you feel better. She purred all the
time and loved to be near me. We were meant to be and were fortunate
to spend almost 18 years together. She was loved and is greatly
missed but her memory lives on and she will not be forgotten.
